Creative Devices Ltd has announced its latest ambition to develop existing electrostatic precipitator (ESP) technology to produce a portable clean air device for car passengers and children in buggies and prams.

ESP technology refers to a range of filtration devices removing dust and smoke particles from the air. Although they have a lucrative and successful history within a number of industries, they were only limited to large applications such as power stations until Creative Devices began modifying the technology.

Creative Devices' founder and successful entrepreneur, Wyn Holloway, devised the idea three years ago: "I would not call myself an inventor, more an innovator, finding fresh solutions to problems."

The retrofit device is designed by Holloway to be fitted to the exhaust system, using ESP technology to achieve a reduction of harmful exhaust emissions from cars, vans and other vehicles, which contribute to air pollution.

Following the success of the feasibility evaluation by The Powertrain and Vehicle Research Centre, the automotive testing division of Bath University, which showed an average of 87% soot reduction in the test car's exhaust emissions, two more clean air products are now being developed, using the same technological principles; the first is a portable aluminium alloy device for use inside a car, the second is a unit which can fit to a buggy or pushchair and provide a transparent cover encapsulating the baby or child in an area of purified air.

Both devices are set to be powered by rechargeable batteries and will be designed with the potential to draw power from a series of electrical sources in the home or car.
