Visitors can immerse themselves in the compelling and captivating underwater photography of artist Lucy Ray at her latest art exhibition, which takes place at The Arthouse this November. The Dark Waters photography exhibition captures the emotions of dark water immersion and features images used on the Suede album cover, Night Thoughts.
This compelling exhibition brings together a compilation of different videos and images shot throughout the UK in various pools of black water. Visitors will be able to experience the sense of dread and the vast emptiness of darkness these pools create through the beautifully shot images and video from Ray.
This exhibition taps into our primal senses of immersion and stems from her own experiences with water. Ray said: "This body of work has taken many years to put together. I love being underwater and I find it peaceful and enjoyable, but my mother almost drowned as a child, so she hated the water and was terrified by it. The images show the range of these emotions that dark waters can produce."
Visitors will be able to experience a spectrum of emotions throughout the Dark Waters photography exhibition, including joy, excitement, rage and fear. Using a combination of male and female models (as well as children and a dog), the exhibition will carry people through the emotions and feelings of dark water submersion.
Ray has used many different techniques and tools for this exhibition, including the use of black backdrops to mimic night-time as well as underwater strobe effects and video lighting to help illuminate subjects and bring the images and video to life.
The Dark Waters exhibition is on display at The Arthouse in Sheffield from 23rd - 28th November and will then move online to the official Starfish Underwater Photography website, found at www.starfishunderwaterphotography.com/dark-waters
