This powerful anthology invites you to reflect deeply on the meaning of existence, guiding you through the highs and lows of the human experience. Feel the heartbreak of loss and the bitterness of conflict yet find solace in love and the fragile peace that follows. Through it all, the unwavering theme of resilience shines, reminding us of our capacity to endure and overcome.
These poems don’t just echo universal truths; they also bear witness to specific moments in history, including the harrowing brutality of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. John’s work is a poignant record of contemporary struggles, championing a more inclusive and compassionate world. With his distinct voice, John captures the essence of humanity in all its complexity, ensuring these poems will resonate far beyond our time.
Here are a few verses from a couple of poems to give a flavour of the collection:
IMMORTAL SHRINE
It is sad, so very sad
When you see bodies in the street,
Blood pooling by their feet.
For God’s sake, find me a priest.
What was that all about?
Killing the young and the old,
Raping children by the side of the road,
Then watching their bodies decompose.
Massacre; genocidal crimes.
What is it that you feel inside?
Images that will remain for all time,
Evidence ever an immortal shrine.
COLD, COLD HEART
It’s winter in the cities;
It’s freezing in the towns.
The countryside is full of snow
You’re aiming to bring our country down.
I’m trying hard not to be angry.
Making efforts not to be sad.
But you are stretching my strong will
As I duck missiles from your launchpad.
You’ve got a cold, cold heart.
You’re lost in your cold, cold mind.
There is icy cold within your soul
You’re not just deaf – you’re blind.
Thirteen of the poems are also songs. To hear (and see music videos) of the songs readers can scan the accompanying QR codes. Find the QR code for 'Immortal Shrine' in the book media library. This haunting song is sung by Anna Kypiatkova.
