As the business world reflects on the five years since the pandemic, many headlines focus on challenges and uncertainty. But for Josh Bradley, franchisee of Stagecoach Performing Arts North Tyneside, the past five years tell a different story. Launching his business just six months into the nationwide lockdown in 2020, Josh has not only built a thriving performing arts school but has also expanded his reach, recently taking over a second Stagecoach territory in Newcastle.

A former Sixth-Form drama teacher, Josh had always dreamed of making a positive impact in his local community. When lockdown forced the closure of businesses across the UK, Josh’s plans to open in April 2020 were put on hold. But with unwavering support from Stagecoach and a determination to press on, he adapted to the challenges.

“When we first went into lockdown, I didn’t know what was going to happen – none of us did,” said Josh. “I’d built so much excitement around opening, and then everything just stopped. But Stagecoach gave me the space to decide what was best for my school. I knew the strength of the brand and the clear structure of the classes would give me a solid foundation, so, even though it was daunting, I pushed ahead. I’m so glad I did because, five years later, I’m in a position I never imagined I’d be in.”

Since opening, Josh’s North Tyneside school has grown beyond his expectations, with nearly 275 students and a vibrant, supportive community. Last year, he and his fiancée, Abbie – who left her teaching job to join him full-time – expanded their impact by taking over Stagecoach Newcastle, where they are working to rebuild and grow a school with enormous potential.

“When I started, I had zero students and thought that getting to 200 would be an incredible milestone. Now we’ve surpassed that and I’m managing two territories with a fantastic team. I never expected Stagecoach to become such a big part of my life, but it’s been an amazing journey.”

What sets Josh’s schools apart is the warm, family-oriented atmosphere he and Abbie have cultivated. “We know our students and, as much as possible, their parents by name. We create experiences beyond theatre shows, like festivals and Christmas events, so families feel truly part of something special,” explained Josh. “It’s important to us that families feel connected to the school, and that’s only possible if we build those relationships. We’ve worked hard to create that sense of community, and it’s one of the things I’m most proud of.”

With a wedding to plan this summer and two growing schools to nurture, life is busy for Josh and Abbie, but they would not have it any other way. “We’ve chosen to be ambitious because we’re at a stage in life where we’ve got the energy for it. Our teachers love working at Stagecoach and some are even asking for more hours because they enjoy it so much! So, while we’re happy where we are now, I’m always open to what the future might bring. When I look back to where we started, I’m reminded that sometimes the best opportunities come when you least expect them.”

Josh’s journey is not an isolated success story. Stagecoach Performing Arts has seen many franchisees launch their businesses during uncertain times – whether facing economic challenges or personal hurdles – and go on to build thriving, sustainable enterprises. The strength of the Stagecoach model, combined with a supportive network and a proven framework for success, has empowered franchisees to turn their passion for performing arts into flourishing businesses.

Andy Knights, CEO of Stagecoach, has seen first-hand the resilience and dedication shown by franchisees like Josh. “Josh’s story is a perfect example of how determination and the right support can lead to extraordinary success, even in the most challenging circumstances. We’ve seen time and again how our franchisees rise to the occasion, using their passion and our proven model to build strong businesses that make a positive impact in their communities. Josh has gone above and beyond, and we’re incredibly proud of what he’s achieved over the last five years.”

Andy added, “Franchising offers a future-proof way to build a business, and Stagecoach provides the structure and support to help our franchisees succeed – no matter what challenges they face. Whether navigating global uncertainty or overcoming personal hurdles, our model equips franchisees with the tools they need to build something lasting – and that’s what makes franchising such a powerful opportunity.”
