Islington eatery Delaterra, on the district’s Essex Road, is bringing tasty tapas and other Spanish food to north London with a varied menu that has won rave reviews on websites such as TripAdvisor.

The Spanish tapas tradition of eating snacks or small portions of main dishes in the early evening, perhaps combining several to make a substantial meal, is of course already well known and established in the UK. Indeed, a small, no-reservations London tapas bar was named Britain’s top restaurant in 2015.

Now Delaterra is set to help meet this demand for food from Spain with its unique, innovative menu from owner Ovidi Perez.

“We’re delighted to be bringing the flavours of Spain to this part of north London. We’re open all day, and happy to just serve drinks if you can resist the food!” says Ovidi.

The tapas menu includes specialities such as baked eggs (huevos al plato), gazpacho (chilled tomato soup), Spanish black pudding and artisan cheese and cured meat boards.

At the same time, there is an imaginative brunch menu, including, for example, baked eggs and smoked serrano ham with tomatoes on toast. Meanwhile, dishes such as vegan jumbo beans stew are on offer for lunch.

TripAdvisor reviewer Sheela McL wrote: “Ovidi is a master of beautiful food with amazing flavours.” Another customer posted: “I came for the food and coffee and stayed for the sangria. The owner is passionate about high-quality produce and homemade food.”

Finally, Louise P wrote: “This section of Essex Road really needed a decent café – now it has a wonderful one!”
