Young performers and studio assistants at Drama Kids are gaining access to formal training opportunities that go far beyond the stage – thanks to the dedication of passionate franchisees like Caryn Walton-Binns at Drama Kids York. In addition to nurturing creativity and confidence through weekly classes, franchisees are now helping students take their first steps into the world of performing arts education and teaching. Through nationally recognised qualifications, these young people are being supported to build valuable skills, gain hands-on experience and explore future career ambitions – all within their local Drama Kids settings.

As part of the growing range of professional development opportunities available across the Drama Kids network, students at Caryn’s franchise are working towards the RSL Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Music and Performing Arts Learning – a nationally recognised qualification provided by Rock School London. Designed for those keen to support teaching and learning in music and performing arts environments, the course is gaining momentum across the network with the support and encouragement of the Head Office team.

Although the qualification is open to anyone aged 16 or over, many of Caryn’s participants are teenage studio assistants who already help out in younger classes. “Most of my students begin preparing for the course around age 15, then formally enrol once they are 16,” explained Caryn. “It’s also open to adults – I currently have one teaching assistant working towards it alongside the teens.”

The course typically takes 18 months to two years to complete, although it is possible to complete it within a single academic year, and includes three core modules: Safeguarding, Planning the Learning, and Delivering the Learning. Caryn generously invests her own time to guide her students through the process – even personally funding the qualification for one assistant to ensure she could take part.

“I don’t earn anything from offering this qualification,” said Caryn. “But I believe in investing in the young people I work with. This gives them meaningful experience, formal training and UCAS points to support their university applications. It’s a fantastic way for them to gain confidence and purpose from the voluntary roles they already take on with us.”

While the course is entirely optional for Drama Kids franchisees, Caryn’s experience is inspiring others across the network to explore its potential. Her commitment is delivering real results – not just in qualifications, but in life-changing outcomes.

“One of my students, Llewelyn, originally said he didn’t want to teach or pursue drama. After completing the qualification, he completely changed his mind and is now considering applying for teacher courses at university,” said Caryn. “That’s the power of giving young people the chance to try something new.”

Thanks to the course’s flexibility, it’s accessible for students juggling school and exams. Several of Caryn’s learners have recently gone on to achieve success beyond the classroom – one earned a place at the prestigious CAPA College in Wakefield, a specialist performing arts sixth form, while another secured entry into the National Youth Theatre after three determined attempts.

This initiative highlights how Drama Kids franchisees are going above and beyond to nurture future leaders in the arts. With support from Head Office, opportunities like the RSL qualification are helping students transform classroom experience into real-world qualifications – and, in some cases, discover entirely new career ambitions.

“What franchisees like Caryn are doing is nothing short of remarkable,” said Becky Goodfield, COO at Drama Kids. “By giving students the chance to earn a nationally recognised qualification while still at school, they’re helping shape the next generation of performers, educators and leaders in the arts. It’s inspiring to see our network create real-world impact that stretches far beyond the stage, and we’re proud to support them every step of the way.”
